words matter

I may be the typical kid growing up in a dysfunctional family, I was constantly told I was worthless and would never amount to anything.  When you are constantly barraged with these words you tend to believe them, especially when they come from authoritative figures.  I was labeled a “rebellious” child because I was determined to prove all my critics wrong.  Condemnation didn’t just come from my family, but also my teachers, classmates and friends.

2 Corinthians 5:17 If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away, and all things are become new.

In God’s eyes a born-again believer is a brand new babe and totally innocent, but the babe must grow into the image God has for them.  How does a convert become this new creature?  By listening to what their Heavenly Father says over them.  He calls us righteous, blessed, victorious, innocent, sons, highly favored, healed and saved.  When the Father speaks His Word over us and we believe Him, then we conform to the image of His dear Son.  Old things begin to fade away because they do not fit the new man, he is a child of God above everything else.

Proverbs 26:2 You have a little fear from an undeserved curse as from the dart of a wren or the swoop of a swallow.

When you become a child of God,  every negative word people speak over you will mean nothing.  A negative word is something men speak over us that they want to happen.  They have no power over our lives because we are not citizens of their world, we are strangers and pilgrims just passing through.  Now we have a choice, we can listen to uncircumcised men and believe what they say or we can listen to our Heavenly Father and believe what He says.  All those things people spoke over me as a boy have not come to pass, every day now God’s Word is working mightily in me.

Mathew 12:37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.

We must stop repeating what people say about us and begin to speak what Father says about us.   It is said that old habits die hard, maybe so, but all bad habits must come to an end.  We do not become an accomplished saint over night, we must grow to maturity.  My childhood as a new-born babe in Christ has been the best time of my life, it has been a time of discovery and joy.  I no longer put road blocks in my life, I have learned to speak words of justification over my life.

I now have a filter over my life, everything I speak and what others speak of me goes through the Holy Ghost.  My friend the Holy Spirit gives me witness and puts every word in a category, I know what words are good and what words are not so good.

If you believe you can, you’re right. If you believe you can’t, you’re right.

God’s Word has convinced me that I can do all things through Christ Jesus Who strengthens me.
