more than a prayer

Prayer is very important to a believer, it is our life line to heaven and our Father.  Prayer is so important that the Lord Himself had all the prayers we would ever need to say recorded in His Word.  And then He went a step further, He gave us the Holy Spirit and tongues to enable us to pray His perfect will every time.  If I didn’t know any better I would feel sorry for the devil, but I know better.  If it were not for the devil, we wouldn’t need to pray about anything!  There is something else we need to pay attention to, our relationship with our heavenly Father is more than a prayer.

John 14:23 Jesus said, if a man love Me he will keep My Words: and My Father will love him, and we will come unto him and make our abode with him.

The committed Christian never has to search for God, his Lord is “with him” always.  Prayer is based on “need”, but if our Father is within us why can’t we just talk to Him like we do a close friend?  We read in the Gospels the conversations between Jesus and His disciples, but not every meeting was recorded because there is nothing to learn.  If God is as close as He says He is, why can’t we just talk to Him and tell Him how we feel about Him?  Prayer is spiritual but not everything need be spiritualized.  There have been times where I went out to pray and ended up “day dreaming”.  In the middle of my folly the Lord has spoken something to me and it became a life changing lesson.  There are no secrets we can hide from God, it is foolish to think He is ignoring us.

Psalm 44:21 Shall not God search this out?  For He knows the secrets of the heart.

We can speak from our hearts but even before we do, God knows what we will say.  We do not need to speak aloud in order for the Lord to hear us, He can hear our thoughts.

Isaiah 26:3 You will keep him in perfect peace, whose thought is stayed on You because he trusts in You.

It is not realistic to reserve your thought life exclusively for God, you are a triune being and you must give thought for the other aspects of your existence.  However, in the course of your day if you consider your Lord before making most decisions, then your mind is stayed on Him.  We must give the Master a place in our thought life in addition to our prayer life.  When a young man is pursuing a romantic relationship with a young girl, she is all he has on his mind.  As we pursue an eternal relationship with our Lord, should He not be on the forefront of our mind?

Romans 2:16 In the day when God will judge the secrets (motives) of men by Jesus Christ according to the Gospel.

If a man does not reserve space in his mind for the Word, he will be caught off guard on judgement day.  But for the man whose mind was stayed on the Lord, he knows what is coming he just doesn’t know how grand it will be.  Our Lord needs more than a prayer.
