When the Lord led Israel into the wilderness there was no place that had enough food to feed them, but when people follow the Lord by faith He will sustain them.  Every morning Israel went out and around their camp lay bread from heaven called manna.  They were instructed to gather as much as they needed for that day, nothing more nothing less.

Exodus 16:20 Israel did not hearken unto Moses; some of them kept some in store for the next day, but it bred worms and stank.

Israel became complacent, they did not want to get up early every morning and gather their daily bread.  If they tried to “store” it up, it would deteriorate because it was past its intended purpose.  Manna could sustain a man and his family for an entire day but he would need some more for the next day.  Manna was a type of something to come.

John 6:33 The bread of God is He that comes down from heaven and gives His life unto the world.

Jesus is the New Testament manna that God gave to men so they could have external life.  So how do we eat His flesh?  In the beginning of the book Jesus is called the Word of God, and the Word became flesh.  When you read or hear His Word and you believe it, you are eating His flesh.  The instructions for eating manna never changed, we need fresh manna every day.  What you heard and accepted yesterday has served its purpose, it gave you life for that day.  Now if you have accepted Jesus you have eternal life abiding in you.  The quality of this life depends on what you feed your spirit.  If you feed on His Word every day it will sustain you the whole day.  But if you fast from the Word you will be weak and lack stamina.  God’s Word is full of life, it doesn’t take much to equip a man for service.  Many saints do a daily devotional and God does not put a time limit on such an event.  Every man should know how much he needs to get him through the day above the evil in this world.

Luke 11:1-4 Our Father who art in heaven, … give us day by day (for the day) our daily bread.

Our daily bread is our daily sustenance, it’s what we need for our flesh and our spirit.  Remember God’s people in the wilderness, they were being led of the Lord so He was responsible to feed them.  If we choose to be led of the Spirit then God is responsible for our well being.  He will sustain us with the manna of His Word every day.  When I neglect to eat my daily bread I find myself trying to make my own way in my own strength, then I wonder why God isn’t stepping in and helping me!

Luke 4:4 It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

We have a life in the flesh and a life in the spirit, both require nutrition and God provides both.  Whichever you feed the most will be the strongest.
