Bible humility

Humility is a very important subject and also a misunderstood issue.  Years ago the Lord told me that humility is perceiving things exactly as they are, no exaggeration.  In the church I grew up in poverty was a badge of humility.  It meant you were living the Christian dream.  If God wants all of His people living in poverty, who will pay to have the Gospel published all over the world?  So what is the Bible kind of humility?

John 5:19 And Jesus said: the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do: for what things soever He does, these also does the Son likewise.

The man Jesus would not take credit for any of His good works.  He directed all of the attention and glory to the Father.  Jesus had to choose His words carefully because He was the Son of God, Son of man.  He wanted to make certain that the people knew He was just a man that was used of God.

John 5:41 I receive not honor from men.

Jesus would not let anyone give Him the credit for what His Father did through Him.  Jesus chose to exercise His humility so the Father could use Him to perform mighty miracles.  To say you can do nothing is not true humility.  To say you can do all things with the Father in you doing the works is humility.  It is quite easy to mislead people and misrepresent our Lord.  I learned something years ago from Kenneth Copeland.  He said he ignores criticism and compliments; he doesn’t accept either one.

Mathew 8:4 See you tell no man…
Mark 7:36 And He told them they should tell no man
Mark 9:9 And He charged them, tell no man.

All through the Gospels we see Jesus telling those who saw miracles not to tell anyone.  They did not yet understand and He did not want men giving Him the credit and glory for things He did not do.  He wanted them to believe His Father, not Him.  He was showing them the Father but they couldn’t see Him.

1Peter 5:5 Be clothed with  humility: for God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

Everything we have comes by grace.  We can’t earn it and we don’t deserve it but we can have it all the same.  John the Baptist said he needed to decrease so Jesus could increase.  Jesus came to reveal the Father and the Father’s power, not His, so He too was decreasing.

John 14:10 I am in the Father and the Father is in Me.  The words that I speak to you I speak not of Myself: but the Father that dwells in Me, He does the supernatural.

It was humility on Jesus’ part to say the Father dwells in Him and it was humility for Jesus to say the Father works the miracles.  He is our example of humility, the Father dwells in us and He will do the works if we will give Him the preeminence.  We must submit to do what the Father tells us to do so He can do the works.  I like this chain of command.  I like not being responsible for the healing of people.  I like not being God because I never could be.  As far as poverty is concerned, Jesus became poor that we may be rich.  He became the curse of poverty so we would not need to bear it.  God has given us the power to get wealth, thank you.
