When we read the Scriptures, we find Jesus calling people with a variety of different names and titles.  Peter’s name was Simon but Jesus called him Peter, which means piece of the rock.  He called the Scribes and Pharisees serpents and snakes, He was connecting them to their father the devil.  Years ago the Lord would refer to me as a sinner but now He calls me son.  So our names and titles will change depending on what we are willing to believe.

John 10:3 The sheep hear His voice; and He calls His sheep by name and leads them about.

In reference to sheep, this is a common title to a group of people, He calls them by name.  People you have met can call you by name so this does not indicate a personal relationship.  God so loved the world, well we are all citizens of the world, so in this statement there is no intimacy.  God loves me because He loves all the people of the world.  This truth does not separate anyone from anybody.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they will be dealt with as sons of God.

So what is better, to be called a sheep or a son of God?  A title can be a general reference or it can be a term of endearment.  I have had a lot of intimate conversations with my Lord and He has never called me Jerry, He calls me son.  Most of the time He never salutes me, He just starts speaking and in a few minutes I catch up to Him.  The more I resign to act like my Father, the more intimate our conversations.  If you’re born again, you’re one of His sheep, but some of God’s people treat God as if He’s a stranger.  When God is a stranger, you don’t follow Him very much, just when you need something.

Revelation 3:16 Because you are lukewarm and neither cold or hot, I will spew you out of my mouth.

It is never a good thing to have the Lord call us lukewarm, this means we were hot but we wondered away from the fire.  When a man invites Jesus into His heart, Jesus comes in expecting to increase the property value.  Most folks are excited to have God in their life, but when the cares of this world which are the deceitfulness of riches and lusts of other things enter in, they push God aside.  Can you imagine how pleased God is when a man of God resists all the temptations of the world and remains steadfast in his connection with God.

Mathew 25:21 Well done thou good and faithful servant, you have been faithful, enter into the  joy of the Lord.

When this short part of our life is over we will stand before our Lord and we will hear Him say one of two things.  We will hear Him say “well”, or we will hear Him speak the above Scripture.  The background of a sinner is sin, I cannot imagine going back to the life He saved me from.  Our spirit wants to remain close to the Lord, but our flesh wants to wonder away and satisfy itself with the lusts of the world.  We are spirit and we are flesh, whichever one is fed the most will be the strongest.  It’s important to me what God calls me, I want to give Him a legitimate reason to call me “faithful”.

    Scriptures to meditate on:

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily besets us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.

Psalm 26:4 Lord you can scrutinize me. Refine my heart and probe my every thought. Put me to the test and you will find it is true.

2 Cor 10:6 It is written, and having a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

1 Peter 4:17 For judgement begins at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

Psalm 139: 23, 24 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me of unbelief and lead me in the way everlasting.

2 Timothy 2:4 No soldier when in service gets entangled in the enterprises of (civilian) life: his aim is to satisfy and please the one who enlisted him (God)! DO ALL FOR THE GLORY OF GOD!
